DERMAPLANING AFTERCARE
What To Expect
Day 1 – The first 24-hours is when your skin is most reactive. Cleanse, moisturize, and protect!
Day 2 – Your skin has already started rebuilding its protective barrier.
Day 4 – After the first 72 hours, you may resume your normal skin-care routine, however, do not use any physical exfoliants and never forget your sunscreen!
Day 7 – After the first week you can resume physical exfoliants.
Post-Treatment
Avoid drinking alcohol for the first 24 hours.
Avoid direct / prolonged sun exposure for the first 48 hours as it increases the risk of hyperpigmentation. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if outside.
Avoid vigorous activity and hot heat for the first 48 hours, light exercise is okay.
Do not go swimming or put face under water for the first 48 hours.
Do not take long hot showers or put face under a hot stream of water, this includes saunas and steam rooms for the first 48 hours.
Avoid surfaces that could irritate your skin i.e. pillows, beards, collared or turtleneck shirts for the first 48 hours.
Avoid waxing, electrolysis, or threading for 7 days.
Skin-Care Routine
Cleanse your face (and neck) with a mild, non-foaming cleanser in the morning and evening. Avoid anything with scrubbing beads, physical exfoliants, or strong surfactants. Your skin has already been exfoliated — adding more exfoliation on top of that creates unnecessary irritation.
Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to help your skin stay hydrated while it rebuilds. Your skin may feel slightly drier than usual in the first day or two, which is completely normal — you have removed the layer that was holding surface moisture in place. Hyaluronic acid serums work well here because they attract and hold moisture without introducing potentially irritating active ingredients.
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen as needed throughout the day. This is the single most important aftercare step and is non-negotiable for at least the first week, though ideally every day regardless of treatment. With the dead cell layer removed, your skin has less natural UV protection than usual. A mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide is the gentlest option if your skin feels sensitive.
Do not use retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or vitamin C serums following your treatment for 3 days. These are all active ingredients that work by penetrating the skin, and on freshly dermaplaned skin, they will penetrate more deeply and aggressively than intended. Retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and high-concentration vitamin C should all be paused for 72 hours after treatment. This is not because they are dangerous — it is because they are more likely to cause redness, stinging, or irritation on sensitized skin.
Do not apply foundation nor makeup for 72 hours to prevent clogging pores.
Do not pick or peel the skin, as this will cause hyper pigmentation and/or surface scars.
Change your pillow case to prevent bacteria transfer.
